According to Project Management Institute, a project is a "temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service or result" It says project management, is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, techniques and activities to meet the project requirements.
In a traditional project using the waterfall model, it is important to get the requirements right up front. If changes are needed, they go through a change process.
The model stresses a sequential and logical flow of software development activities, but research shows many IT project are not delivered on time; requirements are not met, and an increase in budget slowly raises because you cannot get all of the requirements right up front.
Our project managers follow the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) waterfall model for big projects, where the requirements are stable and will not change or complex project. The model, however, has been tailored to fit our needs. This type of approach is useful for calculating the cost and creating a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), among other things.
Agile software development refers to a group of software development methodologies. We use this type of development in those projects where flexible and changes is a must such as Building Apps for Ios. When using the agile methods, we feel it is also important to use scrum the framework for agile development.
In either case, we still require that our project managers understand the ten knowledge area because we feel this experience gives any project a more solid foundation to build upon.
We take project management seriously therefore At NETWORK ADVISING-U we also rely on our "PM Methodologies Guidelines" that detail best practices, business cases and process that has lead to success in our traditional and nontraditional projects.
